Body Fat Test
Your Own Personal Body Fat Test / Analysis
Hi and welcome to the Body Fat Test / Analysis page. Here you will find all the info you need to know about our Body Fat Testing / Analysis service.
Tanita InnerScan™ Series BC 545
We use the BC 545 to test your body fat / composition. It sends a safe, low signal from eight hand- and foot-plate electrodes through the body. The measured resistance to the flow (Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis) is fed into researched equations to provide accurate and personalized body composition readings. The retractable hand-grips allow full-body composition to be taken quickly and with increased accuracy.
Technology:
- Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA)
- Advanced Dual Frequency (ADF)
- Transparent Electrodes
Measures:
- Visceral fats
- Physique rating
- Body fats in increments of 0.1%
- Total body water percentage
- Muscle mass
- Bone mass
- Basal Metabolic Range (BMR) and calculates metabolic age
- Total weight in increments of 0.1kg
- Measures Body Fat% and Muscle Mass by segments of your body
It will simply & accurately calculate a number of areas of your body composition all in a matter of minutes. It is completely painless and non invasive and you are not required to remove any clothing except a shoes and socks. It measures all of the following areas:
BODY FAT %
This is the total % of fat you have in and on your body and is made up of intramuscular fat (fat stored within the muscles), visceral fat (fat stored around your organs) and subcutaneous fat (the fat that you hate the most – the stuff you see in the mirror).
BODY FAT WEIGHT
As it says – this is the total amount of fat you are carrying in kilos.
TARGET FAT% (min/max)
This is the fat % that you should be aiming for in order to be considered in the healthy range and at low risk of weight related health issues & disease such as Cardio Vascular Disease, Diabetes etc etc. Ranges of desired fat levels differ for men & women and for athlete’s vs a normal person who just wants to be healthy. The Maltron analyser will tell you the best range for your personal goals. E.g. a normal male might aim for approx 17 – 25 % fat whilst a normal female may aim for 25 – 30 %. It is essential for health for men to be 2 – 4 % at the bare minimum and women 10 – 12 %. We will explain your result fully and what you should be aiming for. You may get a pleasant surprise and find out that you are actually in the correct range when you though you were too fat
BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)
You’ve all heard of this one, it is your Body Mass Index which is your weight divided by your height squared = BMI. Personally, I consider this a pretty poor measure of health as it is too generic and does not consider bone mass or muscle mass. See here:
BMI Categories:
- Underweight = <18.5
- Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
- Overweight = 25-29.9
- Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
Here is my point – I am 70 kg and 165 cms, this gives me a BMI of 25.7 which is overweight according to the BMI scale. Am I overweight – I think not! It does not take into consideration my muscle mass therefore it is not accurate. We will ignore this measure as we will have your exact body fat % which is relevant to you!
BASAL METABOLIC RATE (BMR) (KCal) – THIS IS YOUR METABOLISM!
Your BMR is the amount of calories your body burns on a daily basis to stay alive. So, this is your metabolic rate – the rate at which your engine revs and burns fuel all day in order for you to survive. So, if you think you have a sluggish metabolism – we will confirm it with this measure. It is an awesome number to know so that you can take control of body and feed it the right amount so that you can achieve your goals. For example: If your BMR is 1300 calories then you must eat 1300 calories a day to stay at your current weight. But, if you want to lose weight you would want to consume approx 300 calories less than this so that your body burns stored fat to make up the difference. So, you would want approx 1000 calories per day. This is very powerful info and can put you in the fast track to your weight loss goal.
TARGET WEIGHT (min/max)
The machine will tell you what weight range you should aim for.
MUSCLE MASS
This is the weight of the muscle on your body.
BONE MASS
This is weight of all of the bone in your body and there are ranges at which you should fall into. This is a particularly important measure if you have a family history of osteoporosis – you will find out if your bone mass is adequate. If not, there are measures you can take to increase your bone mass such as weight bearing resistance training and the introduction of a calcium supplement to your daily routine.
LEAN %
This is simply 100% minus your fat % = lean %
WATER LITRES
This is a great measure. It tells you how many litres of water you have in your body. So, if you think you are fluid retentive for any reason – this measure will tell you. Or, if you think you are dehydrated – this measure will tell you.
WATER %
This is % of your body that is made up of water -as in the percentage of all fluid (blood, plasma etc) in your body that is water.
TARGET WATER (min/max)
This is the % of water that you should have in your body. If you are holding water or dehydrated – this measure will tell you how much extra you need or how much you need to flush out. Don’t worry, we’ll tell you how to do this should your need to.
Why measure your body composition?
Well, wouldn’t you love to know exactly how fat you are (or perhaps are not as the case may be J) and how many kilos of fat you are carrying in & on your body? And, wouldn’t it be great to know what your metabolic rate is so you can control your calories and your weight? And, how much water you have in your body would be good to know too – right? I’m sure you agree that yes is the answer to these questions. And, if you have read all the info above then I doubt you need any more reasons to undertake your very own Body Fat Analysis.
People of different weights have different amounts of fat and fat free mass, therefore for those interested in body composition to know the right proportion of fat to lean ratio is very important. A very high or indeed very low percentage of fat may be associated with increased risk of certain diseases (e.g. cardiovascular disease or diabetes etc).
The information gathered from one of these analyses will be extremely beneficial to all different types of people with varying ages and varying health & fitness goals. Whether you are an aspiring athlete or a man or woman wanting healthy body fat levels or an older person wishing to know your muscle mass – our Body Fat Analysis will help you all.
How does the Maltron BF-906 work?
Bio-electrical impedance at 50kHz works by measuring the impedance (resistance plus reactance – at this frequency the current passes across cell membranes) of the body to a safe alternating current.
Maltron Analyser uses the scientific tetrapolar method of four electrodes which are applied to the right side of the body on the hand, wrist, foot and ankle. On entering all the parameters and resting in supine position with hands and legs slightly apart, Maltron BF-906 is activated. The processing powers of the BF-906 analyses the data and displays the statistics within seconds.
Bio-electrical Impedance is a scientific word used to describe our body’s ability to resist (slow down) electricity as it flows through us.
Maltron Analyzers measure the flow of electrical signals as they pass through Fat, Lean tissue and water each resisting, the flow of electrical signals at different rates giving us a highly reliable and accurate measure of the amounts of each of these components.
What is the procedure, how long does it take and how do I prepare for the test?
The procedure is very simple. You visit us at our studio and we have a brief discussion about your current health and any goals you may have for your future health &/or fitness. You explain to us why you wish to have the analysis and what information you would like from us based upon your test results.
For the test we will need:
- your age
- your weight (we can weigh you)
- your height (we can measure you)
- your activity level – normal (less than 10 hrs per week)/active (10 hrs plus per week)
We then use this info to input into the analyser so that it can give us a highly accurate result.
All you will need to do is take off your shoes and socks (no other clothing needs to be removed at all). You then stand on the Tanita BC 545 and reach down and pick up the hand electrodes and then stand up straight. The machine will then go to work, first it will register your weight and then step by step it will analyse each area of your body. The entire process takes about 1 minute and we record the results on a special analysis record sheet.
We’ll then present you with your results and explain what they mean. We are highly experienced and qualified Personal Trainers and you will also benefit from our years of PT experience as we explain the results of your test and what you can/should do to reduce your body fat % if so required and the most efficient & fastest ways to do it. You’ll be given a report table to take away with you with recommendations added by us (if necessary).
To prepare for the test all we ask is that you refrain from coffee, alcohol or soft drinks for approx 12 hours prior to the test and ensure that you have not eaten for at approx 2 hours prior. The best time for the test is in the morning before you have consumed too much liquid / food for the day.
Consultations are approximately 20 minutes (time dependant on test results and level of explanation needed) and are available by appointment all day Monday – Saturday.
